Accessibility

The Sky Den is accessible in the main but has limited multifunctional space, and this may impact on those who are wheelchair dependent.

The triangle is not accessible by anyone who cannot climb the external stairs from the walkway.

The Square (main living area) is fully accessible, however, the space is limited, when the furniture is either folded out or set up in bedroom format. It houses the small kitchen which has a height-adjustable bench. This area is level entry from the roadside through to the balcony.

The Circle (al fresco seating and dining) is accessible to wheelchairs, via a gently sloped walkway, but has limited turning space.

Washing The wet room with shower, toilet and basin is located outside the square and is wheelchair accessible.

The Triangle has a sleeping platform accessed via a small 2 step ladder, with under-bed storage.

Due to the design of the building there is no space to store a hoist or other large items of equipment. Please contact Calvert Trust Kielder prior to your stay, for equipment needs or more information.

 

Sleeping

Beds can be made up as 4 singles OR 1 double (triangle) and 2 singles (square)

Sheets, sleeping bag liners, blankets and towels are provided however we recommend bringing your own sleeping bags during the colder months or if you sleep outside in the circle.

Extra space available

Space for 1 pet from £50 per pet per stay
Space for 1 baby no charge.

Own travel cot - mezzanine sleeping space up ladder, not suitable for babies and toddlers.

Heating and Lighting

There is electric lighting throughout the Sky Den.

As we are in an International Dark Skies Park external lighting is limited. We recommend you bring a torch with you, especially if you plan to arrive after dark.

There is a small wall heater in the triangle and another in the square.

There is a wood burning stove in the circle (NO disposable BBQs please).

 

Our Location

Calvert Trust Kielder is situated in is situated in a 40-acre woodland site with the spectacular Kielder Water & Forest Park and Northumberland International Dark Skies Park.

Driving is the best way to get to the centre as we are not served by public transport. Our nearest train station is in the market town of Hexham, 32 miles away, although we do operate transfers with our accessible minibuses - please contact our Guest Services Team if you would like to book transport on 01434 250232.

Hexham, with its historic abbey, riverside walks and antique shops is a popular tourist destination situated just off the A69 which connects Carlisle in the west to Newcastle upon Tyne in the east, almost following the route of the famous World Heritage site, Hadrian's Wall.

 

Directions

From the South and East of England

Head for Newcastle upon Tyne and follow the A1 till you see signs for Hexham A69

Follow the A69 past Hexham until a turning on the right of the dual carriageway signs towards Acomb and Chollerford A6079.

Follow the road through Acomb village, Wall village and through to Chollerford at which point brown tourist information signs start signalling the way to "Kielder Water and Kielder Forest".

Continue into Kielder Water & Forest Park passing Tower Knowe Information Centre on the right. Calvert Trust is only 3.5 miles further on the left.

 

From the West of England and South of Scotland

Leave the M6 at Junction 44 Carlisle and follow the A7 through Longtown.

On approaching the next village of Canonbie there are brown tourist information signs marking the route through to Kielder. This route takes you through many country roads and is approximately one hour in journey time from Carlisle.

Eventually you will come to Kielder village. Do not turn into the village but keep going past.

The Calvert Trust is 6 miles past Kielder Village on the right hand side of the road.

Sky Den is located on the riverside 50m beyond chalets 3, 4 & 5. There is a layby drop off point by the entrance. Please note some (most) satellite navigation systems incorrectly direct you to our site and we recommend using our directions.
